I used to treat Galveston like a pit stop. Leave Houston at 6 a.m., crawl I-45, hit the causeway already tense, then sit in a parking line hoping the lot had opened.

That is a bad way to start a vacation you drove across Texas to take.

Drive to the island the afternoon before. Sleep. Eat something that is not a gas-station burrito. Then roll to the terminal after the lots actually open.

This is a Texas-port guide, not a Caribbean brochure. The point of Galveston is that you drive to the port, skip the flights, and be at sea the same day.

The hotel night is not the cruise. If you still need the sailing, Search Galveston sailings first, then book the room around it.

Seawall or Strand. Pick the job, not the postcard.

The Strand is historic downtown, a few blocks from the harbor. Stay here if you want dinner on foot and a short hop to the ships. Visit Galveston lists The Tremont House, Harbor House, The George Manor, and Avenue O as cruise-friendly, with parking, a shuttle, or both depending on the package. The Tremont House Park & Sail package parks one car up to seven days and includes a ride to the terminal. Book that package. A regular room night does not include week-long parking.

The Seawall is the Gulf side. Stay here if you want a beach walk, a pool, or more room choices. Visit Galveston lists Holiday Inn Resort Galveston-On The Beach, Hilton Galveston Island Resort, The San Luis Resort, Gaido’s Seaside Inn, Hyatt Select Galveston Beachfront, and Beachfront Palms Resort. Some shuttles exist only inside a cruise package. Gaido’s is listed with free non-covered cruise parking and no shuttle. Hyatt Select and Beachfront Palms are listed at $10 a day for cruise parking, no shuttle. Read the package, not the property name.

I pick the neighborhood, not a ranking. Strand to walk to dinner. Seawall for the Gulf.

How park-and-cruise actually works

You have two honest options.

Park at an official Port of Galveston lot and walk or shuttle. Or leave the car at a hotel package and ride to the ship.

The port has four terminals on Harborside Drive. Terminal 10 is Royal Caribbean. Terminals 25 and 28 are Carnival, Disney, and Princess. Terminal 16 opened November 7, 2025 and serves MSC and Norwegian. Confirm your terminal on the boarding documents. The lots are not interchangeable.

The port does not publish a single daily rate. Price depends on the lot, cover, distance, and cruise length. You see the number when you enter dates on the official reservation site. Book there. Reservations usually open within 18 months. Prepaid spots are the ones left on a busy Saturday.

Official lots open at 9 a.m. on most sailing days. If the last ship is late getting people off, the lot opens later. Showing up at 7:30 gets you a closed gate.

You can drop bags at the terminal first, then drive to park. That is official port policy.

Economy lots A and B on 33rd Street run a free shuttle to Terminals 25 and 28 about every five to seven minutes. The Express Lot and SMP Garage are park-and-walk. SMP clearance is 6 feet 8 inches. At Terminal 10, North, South, and Pier 14 have shuttles. North Premium and Pier 10 do not.

Lots are patrolled 24/7 by Port of Galveston Police. Cancel online at least 24 hours before you sail and there is no fee. Drive-up works if space is left. Credit cards only. ADA spaces are first come, first served.

Visit Galveston notes a city tax on cars parked longer than 48 hours. It is usually inside the quote.

If you use a hotel package instead, read the fine print. Free overnight parking is not seven days of cruise parking. Some shuttles are included. Some are per person. Some exist only on the cruise rate.

I do not push a rental car. You already have one. Park it, then walk or shuttle.

What I actually do the night before

I get to the island in daylight. One bag comes inside: dinner clothes, chargers, meds, morning documents. The rest stays in the trunk.

I eat downtown on the Strand or walk the Seawall. I do not try Moody Gardens, Pleasure Pier, and a late dinner in one night.

I still sleep later than the I-45 crowd. In the morning I eat something real and leave after 9. Passports, boarding passes, and a charged phone stay in a bag that never goes in a checked suitcase. If I am using a port lot, I drop people and bags at the curb first.

Most Galveston ships leave between 3 and 5 p.m. You have more morning than you think.

Houston is a different drive than Austin or Dallas

From Houston, I-45 South is about 50 miles and about an hour when it behaves. Weekends add time. The causeway is the squeeze. TxDOT is widening I-45 between FM 519 and the Texas City Wye, with detours around La Marque and Texas City. Check DriveTexas the day you leave.

From Austin, figure 200-plus miles and 3.5 to 4 hours in normal traffic. From San Antonio, about four hours. From Dallas, I-45 South is the straight shot, roughly 270 to 310 miles and 4.5 to 5.5 hours before Houston traffic. Do not leave Dallas at 6 a.m. on sail day and expect to feel human at check-in.

If you are coming from Austin, San Antonio, or Dallas, the night-before hotel is the plan. Houston folks can still same-day it. I would not on a holiday weekend, and I would not if the lot opens at 9.

Three things that belong in the car, then in the cabin

These three earn a spot because they solve the hotel night and the port morning.
